Episode 9. RESET Your Audition Book with these 5 Questions

Today, we’re talking about RESETTING your audition book so that it is working FOR you and not AGAINST you.  Yes, did you ever think that your audition book might actually be stopping you from booking gigs?   That is NOT what you want.  You want a book where every song is chosen for a specific purpose and is helping you book the work you want to book.

As we move into Spring of 2021, theaters are beginning to post audition notices and accept submissions for their upcoming seasons. This is sooooo heartening and gets me all amped up about seeing shows again and seeing theatre people getting back to work.

But, my question for you today is: Is your audition book ready????

Do you have your audition cuts selected, and cut neatly, and rehearsed so you can record your selftape the minute you get the audition notice?

For many of us, this past year has been one of NOT SINGING very much.   You may not be feeling like you’re in top vocal condition.  And your audition book may be feeling a little neglected and out of date.  Today’s show is going to help you change that!

It’s time for an audition book RESET.

Today, I’m going to help you completely reset your book and get yourself on track to start auditioning again.

The first step in this reset, is to look at your songs with a critical eye and remove the ones that are no longer serving you and setting intentions for new repertoire.

You might be thinking, I spent SO long collecting these songs, I don’t want to just get rid of them.  Don’t worry!  You won’t have to.

I understand that your audition songs are the result of lots of research and painstaking practice.  Some of them might still be working for you.  But some might not.

Do you really want to keep those songs in your book if they’re not moving you toward your goals?

What we’re going to do today is walk through 5 questions that you must ask of every song in your book, a little test if you will.  If you can answer all YES’s about a song, then you can keep it in your book.  If not, you need to consider replacing it with a song that will be all YES answers.

This may be a little painful at first, but I promise you that, when your book is full of songs that only say YES to these questions, you are going to be more confident in your auditions, and you’re going to start booking work that is more fulfilling to you as an artist.

Press play and let’s RESET your audition book!
